MovieLens Survey
Summer, 2005
This Web page contains screenshots of two surveys given to members of MovieLens
in the Summer of 2005. These surveys are provided in support of
the research paper "Social Comparisons and Contribution to Online
Communities: A Field Experiment on MovieLens", by Yan Chen, Max Harper,
Sherry Li, and Joe Konstan.
Pre-Survey (pdf)
Subjects were randomly assigned one of two variants of this survey.
The first variant is shown. The second variant reversed the
order of pages 5 and 6 to balance a possible order effect.
Post-Survey (pdf)
There were seven variants of this survey. The version shown was
for above-average members in the "Net Benefit" treatment. This is
very similar to the versions shown to other users that were given
experimental treatments, with wording changes on page 6 to reflect the
appropriate experimental condition. Subjects in the control
condition were given a survey that did not contain page 6.
